Quick Synopsis:
[wikipedia:]
“Set in Central America, during the declining period of the Maya civilization, Apocalypto depicts the journey of a Mesoamerican tribesman who must escape human sacrifice and rescue his family after the capture and destruction of his village.”
The Bad:
- Too long for the story. 139min
- Far too many once-in-a-lifetime events happen in the span of two days.
- Too many super-human qualities for the main character.
- Too much running.
The Good:
- Pretty graphically gruesome.
- Maintains a steady amount of tension.
- It keeps you emotionally attached to the villagers.
- You could probably write all kinds of interpretive essays about this movie.
Final Thoughts:
*Spoiler Alert*
This movie is highly overrated on sites like IMDB, scoring 7.9/10 (72,500 votes) back in Oct 2009.
Apocalypto should be re-titled “the luckiest guy that ever lived”.
I mean come on…a solar eclipse, outrunning a jaguar, jumping over a waterfall AND encountering Spanish explorers in the span of like 2 solid days of running non-stop.
